Living Roofs

Green Roofs

A green roof is a roof that is partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium. It generally includes additional layers such as a drainage layer and filter fleece. Green roofs are a popular method of bringing nature into a city or urban environment and can serve several purposes for a building: rainwater antenuation, provide additional insulation, create a habitat for wildlife, provide an aesthetically pleasing landscape and help to lower urban air temperatures.

Fatra single ply membranes have been tested to FLL standards and have the root resistant properties required for use in sedum and green roof build-ups.

A typical green roof build-up consists of:

  • Fatra membrane
  • Fatra sacrificial / protection membrane or geotextile fleece
  • Drainage layer
  • Geotextile filter fleece
  • Growing substrate
  • Sedum vegetation blanket
  • Precast concrete paving slabs & pebble ballast (If required)

Brown or Biodiverse Roofs

Fatra membranes can also be used on biodiverse roofs, an approach to the roof design that particularly looks to improve the environment through the careful selection of local materials and landscaping to encourage wildlife such as insects and birds onto the roof space.

In most cases, these roofs are either left alone to allow the germination of wind-blown seeds, or alternatively, seeds collected from the local area are scattered over the roof area. Over time an ecosystem of plants and animals will develop on the roof. This is seen as a way of partially mitigating the loss of such ecosystems from existing brownfield sites that have been redeveloped.

Brown roofs share many similarites with green roofs, the main difference being that the growing medium (usually locally sourced rubble, gravel, soil, recycled bricks, local vegetation etc.)  is carefully selected to meet a specific biodiversity requirement.

Fatra Modular Tray Green Roof System

Fatra modular trays can be used as an alternative to a fully built-up, layered green roof system. Fatra modular trays provide an all-in-one, easy to install, pre-grown green roof system resulting in established vegetation at the time of installation. The trays are available as sedum, brown wildflower or a sedum & wildflower mix.

Vegetation

  • Sedum modular trays are pre-grown with 8 to 12 varieties of sedum
  • The brown wildflower tray consists of 20 to 30 varieties of wildflowers & meadow grasses
  • The sedum & wildflower option contains both the 8 to 12 varieties of sedum, along with the 20 to 30 varieties of wildflower & meadow grasses

Carrier tray

Made from recycled HDPE plastic, the tray acts as a water reservoir, drainage layer and protection from excessive drying of roots. The drainage cups also improve product handling making it easier to install.

Installation

Loose lay the supplied geotextile fleece over the Fatra membrane. The Fatra Modular Trays are then simply clipped together to create an instant green roof.

The trays can be cut to suit the roof shape. Use a hand saw or grinder and ensure that the cut edge faces the green roof so that it’s supported by the adjacent module.

Maintenance

No immediate after care is required at the time of installation. Each Fatra modular tray comes to site fully established with pre-grown vegetation, eliminating the need for irrigation.
